Clematis are widely known as the “queen of climbers”. They climb trellises, arbors, pergolas, and fences. They thrive in nutrient-rich, well-drained soil. Clematis prefer having their roots cool and shaded, so using mulch or stone around the base is excellent. It should be pruned in late winter before new growth appears. Clematis should also have a light pruning after it flowers in the spring.
